Junior Registration Day 12th September

The Junior Registration day will be a similar format to last year with a brief explanation of the training the club offers, and the opportunities to play in the various teams and the long term development plans of the club.

Dave Seaton of Seaton Sports Wellington, will have a hockey equipment and some new club clothing on display.

1st Team games

The first team continue their pre season programme of games with the county cup against 1st XI teams from Bridgnorth and Shrewsbury hockey clubs at St Georges Astro turf on Saturday.(first push back at 10.30am) The team will play back to back games in a bid to win the cup for the fifth consecutive year.

On Sunday the first team will play host to Chester H.C. in a friendly at the National Sports Centre, Lilleshall. Push back is at 1.30pm.

Mens 1XI Retain County Cup

The Mens 1XI continued their build up to this years league campaign by retaining the Shropshire Star Cup after victories against Bridgnorth (4-1) & Shrewsbury (8-0).

It was not all plain sailing against Bridgnorth when the visitors took the lead from their first notable attack with a well taken close range finish from Matt Ealey after good build up play down Telford's right side. Whilst in other years the team may have adversely reacted to going a goal behind, this current crop is made of sterner stuff and the remainder of the half saw glimpses of what the team is capable of with two well worked goals. Bridgnorth defended well and posed problems on the break but in the second half two more goals secured a 4-1 victory. The margin of victory could well have been greater although Bridgnorth will have been disappointed to only manage the 1 early goal.

In the second game, the result was never in doubt as the team breezed to an 8-0 win against Shrewsbury who were beaten 1-0 by Bridgnorth in the other game in the competition.

What's On This Week.

The first team play their last pre-season friendly against Wolverhampton tonight at Lilleshall push back 8.00pm.

The England mens hockey team play two games against France at Lilleshall on Friday pushback at 7.30pm and again on Saturday at 11.30am before they head off to Dehli for the Commonwealth Games. No charge to watch.

The first team play their first game of this seasons league campaign against Warwick at Lilleshall on Saturday pushback at 12.30am, whilst our Badgers team play a friendly against North Staffs at St Georges pushback also at 1.00pm. The third team will also be playing against North Staffs at 2.30pm.

World Champion

The club is proud to announce that we have our own world champion in the form of 5th team regular Jim Tranter. Jim and 4th team club colleague Alan Bain have just been out to Cape Town, South Africa for the Grand Masters Hockey World Cup.

Jim represented England in the Great Grand Masters side(over 65) while Alan played for Scotland in the Grand Masters side (over 60).

In the pool phase of the competition Scotland played six games winning two, England also played six games winning five, losing one game by a solitary goal to Australia.

England progressed to the semi's beating Germany 3-0 before exacting revenge on Australia in the final with a 2-0 win to become World Champions.

Both Jim and Alan return to club duties with the first games of this seasons domestic league starting this Saturday.

A big well done to them both.

Goal Keeper Shortage

The club has recently lost several goalkeepers that have gone to university or stopped playing and we are looking out for young boys aged from about 11yrs upwards that already play in goal or would like to give it a try.

We can offer specialist coaching which includes a state of the art BOLA bowling machine.

Restricted access to Lilleshall

The main entrance and long drive up to Lilleshall National Sports Centre is being resurfaced.

Construction work is scheduled to start on the 28th October and finish on 22nd November on the main drive (from the main entrance to Wrens Nest crossroads). This section of the main drive will be closed off entirely during this period and car access will be via the Golf Club entrance or via Little Hayes Road. However please note that access via Little Hayes Road is not suitable for lorries or coaches. You are advised to use the Golf Club entrance during this period.

Weekend Games

Push back is at midday.

Also on Sunday we also have a youth team representing the club in the All England U18 cup against Stourport HC which is being held at Lillieshall National Sports Centre.

Push back is 12.30pm.

Sunday Results.

The girls badgers team thrashed Wem badgers 8 _1 at St Georges, with 4 goals coming from Megan Lancaster, Rachel Howells 2 and Lotti Hipperson 2.

The U18 youth team beat Stourport U18's, a side that have previously figured regularly in the final stages of the competition, 4_0 in the first round of the All England Cup, at Lilleshall. Goals from David Goodfield (short corner), Matt Pacey, Jake Evans and Dan Davies completed an assured performance which saw Telford in control for much of the game.

The ladies masters team (over 35yrs) beat Timporley 4_2 away in the Masters All England Cup. Goals scorers were Deb Goodridge 3 and Sue Hughes.

U18 team in action this Sunday.

Bridgnorth are carrying out a pitch inspection at 9.30am, before cancelling the fixture.

5th team players will be notified as soon as the game is cancelled and the website will be updated.

Training on Sunday 5th December is also cancelled.

Music Night 2011 - 7th January

This will be the third successive year that we run our famous

music night. For all those that haven't been in the last two
years, well you've been missing out on a very enjoyable evening
for all ages and teams of TWHC. This year we are having a slight
change to the format...

There will be a variety of acts for you to enjoy. However they
shall not be judged upon like in previous years. Instead they
will be there for you to enjoy at your leisure.
As well as this there will be dinner provided for you, veggie
options available.

It will be a relaxed, fun filled evening for everyone to enjoy.

The evenings entertainment....
With respect to the acts, there will be a large variety including
singers who've sung on live television and some of the best young
musical talent in the country.
But since it isn't a competition- and acts don't necessarily have
to be musical, why not give it a go? There is no judging,
regardless of age, ability or talent, if you want to enter music
night with a musical, comedy sketch, comedy act, dance etc then

Tickets and cuisine...
Tickets are available on the door. We know that there has been
snow disrupted hockey, but this is a good chance to get to see
all of your team mates and other members of the club before the
next half of the season starts. We would highly appreciate if you
could e-mail Ben Rose if you intend on attending the evening,
just so that we have an estimate of how many to cook for.

Do remember that this is a whole club event, helping raise money
for the club as well as being one of the best social events of
the year. Please do your best to attend.

Also the bar will be open ;)

Quick Sticks Tournament

Coaches and players from the club ran a quick sticks tournament in conjunction with the School Sports Partnership at Madeley for six junior schools from across the borough, on Wednesday afternoon at Madeley Academy astro turf pitch.

The schools, Grange Park, Newport Juniors,Moorfield, John Randall, Windmill and Newdale brought ten pupils each who ranged in ability from complete novices to more experienced players.

Although it rained heavily most of the time, the children were enthusiastic and enjoyed the event.

The coaches who gave up their time to help out were Dave Tracey, Dave Goodfield, Ben Rose, Tom Williams, Kevin Williams, Shaun Reeves, Liam Flynn, Grace Flynn and Martin Flynn.

1st team results

Ollie Logan rejoins 1st Xl

Ollie Logan has returned to the 1st Xl after being with national league outfit, Belper HC, for a season and a half. Ollie who plays at full back says that balancing work and travelling to Belper for training was difficult and was one of the reasons he decided to rejoin Telford.

Ollie who lives in the Telford area had kept in touch with the club and was a familiar face at some of the home games.

Ollie says that he was disappointed to leave Belper, but is glad to be back at Telford and looks forward to successful second half of the season.

U18's beat National Champions

The U18's boy's team beat Cannock U18's last night at Lilleshall in the All England Cup, in sub zero temperatures on a just about playable pitch.

Telford went into the break 1-0 up with a goal from Dave Goodfield, with Cannock equalising 10 mins into the second half. Telford regained the lead through Matt Pacey but Cannock equalised making the final score 2-2, resulting in five penalty strokes for each team to decide the winners.

Cannock missed their first stroke, with Telford players, Dave Goodfield, Matt Pacey, Will Phillips and James Pratt all scoring. Cannock scored their next three strokes but their final stroke was acrobatically saved by Telford keeper Mike Gerrard, sealing the win against last year's National Champions.

A great win, well done guys.

U18's win at Belper

The U18 boy's team coached by Dave Tracey and managed by Gwynne Goodfield travelled to Belper on Sunday to play the 3rd round of the All England Cup.

Playing against a useful Belper side, the initial exchanges were fairly even but Telford soon got the upper hand with a goal by David Goodfield. Two further goals by Matt Pacey took the score to 3-0 at the break.

Within seconds of the restart Matt Pacey scored again to complete his hat trick.

Belper kept battling and scored a consolation goal late in the second half making the final score 4-1.

A special note of thanks to Belper Hockey Club, who extended a warm welcome and great hospitality to our team and followers, before,during and after the game.

U18 boys drawn against Wakefield.

FIH Ruling on Face Masks

This mask does not “closely fit the face” and is not “smooth”.

Further, the FIH Medical Committee is of the view that the mask poses a potential risk to an opponent in a collision. It does not therefore meet the further requirement in the Rules that“players must not wear anything which is dangerous to other players”.

All players, team managers, technical officials and umpires are advised of this ban as of today Friday 18th February 2011.

It should be noted that this ban applies across all hockey, senior, junior, outdoor and indoor.

The U18 boys team beat Wakefield 3-1 at Lilleshall today to reach the All England finals at Canterbury on 9th and 10th April, a first for a Shropshire side. Two goals from Matt Pacey which included a penalty stroke early on and short corner plus a short corner goal from Dave Goodfield secured the win over Wakefield who got a late consolation goal three minutes from time.

Well done guys and thanks to our supporters who came down to cheer them onto victory.

Mens second XI secure championship spot

The second XI beat Worcester 8-3 away yesterday, to secure the the West Mids Premier Championship with an unassailable 8 point lead with only two games to go.

A brace of hat tricks from Andy Lloyd and Ian Armstrong with additional goals from Dan Wright and Sam Philpott, secured promotion as Champions to Midland One League of the MRHA after being relegated last season.

A great result for the club .

Boys U12's win Shropshire Mini tournament

Our Boys U12's won the Mini Hockey Shropshire Star Shield on Sunday at Shrewsbury School, a win for the 3rd consecutive year.
They secured first place in the tournament with 2–0, 3-0 & 9-0 victories Bridgnorth, Ludlow and Whitchurch, winning all 3 games without conceding a goal.
They now go through to the regional play offs at Cannock on 3rd April

U15 Boys Shropshire Champions

Our U15 Boys team became Shropshire Champions following a thrilling victory over local rivals Shrewsbury at St Georges today. The team won 6-2 leaving them 2 points ahead of Leominster to win the Badgers League title. They have now won 11, lost 1, with a goal tally of 96 goals for, 9 against.

Tremendous result, tremendous end to the season. Well done guys.

An updated club badge is being introduced for next season showing the club's history and pedigree, dating back to 1895.

The badge uses the familiar current badge but adds the colours that were in the original design that was penned in 1953 by the club secretary at the time, Derek Mulholland. The badge now includes the date of 1895 which was the date that the club was founded as Shifnal Hockey Club.

The symbology of the badge is

Shropshire Loggerhead from the County Badge
The white scroll represents some extremely old historical papers kept in Shifnal Church.
The cross represents the cross on Shifnal Church.
The chain which divides each of the above represents the only manufacturing industry in Shifnal in 1953, that of Chain makers.

The new badge is available exclusively from Seaton Sports, Wellington and is being launched on the U18 boys squad kit who travel to Canterbury today to compete in the All England Finals

Dave Goodfield call up for England

The club is proud to announce that Dave Goodfield has been selected for the England U18 squad competing in the Volvo Eurohockey U18 Championship between the 12th-17th July at Utrecht, Netherlands.

Dave is the second U18 player from the club who will be on international duty in July, with Matt Pacey representing Wales in Milan at the same time.

125th Wenlock Olympian Games Results

Saturday afternoon saw the first ever hockey tournament in the Wenlock Olympian Games, with junior and senior sides competing against other Shropshire clubs, in 15 minute games.

The junior side played Oswestry 1-1, then Shrewsbury 2-2 being undone by defensive errors in both games and having to fight back from going behind.

They then played Whitchurch 3-2 playing some excellent hockey and enjoying a relatively comfortable win.

The two final games were against Bridgnorth 1-2 and Ludlow 0-1, where the team probably played their best hockey pushing both teams to the final whistle, especially against Ludlow (tournamant winners) in the final game when Telford had them pinned in their half in the final minutes going close on several occassions and finishing in a creditable 3rd place.

The senior side, were completely dominant in four of their five games with wins against Market Drayton 3-0, Whitchurch 3-1, Bridgnorth 4-1 and Ludlow 3-1. They drew against Shrewsbury 1-1, who also won four of their five games but pipped them on goal difference by one goal to run out as tournament winners.

Hockey Camp - Monday 8th August until Friday 12th August and Monday 22nd August until Friday 26th August

Students will have the opportunity to work with Shropshire Hockey Association coaches to develop core skills and be provided with opportunities to apply skills in competitive games.

Trampolining Camp- Monday 15 August until Friday 19th August

Students will work with qualified Trampolining coaches to learn basic skills and work through British Gymnastics Awards.

Football Camp- Monday 15 August until Friday 19th August 2011

Students will work with qualified football coaches to develop skills and work with coaches to improve their application of skills by being coached in drills and small sided games.

Cricket Camp- Monday 15 August until Friday 19th August 2011

Students will work with qualified Cricket coaches from Munch Wenlock Cricket Club to improve their batting and fielding skills. Students will receive quality feedback to improve their application of skills within net sessions, drills and small sided games.

Golf Camp- Monday 22nd August until Friday 26th August

Students will develop all areas of their golf game, they will work with a professional golf teacher to improve all areas of their game. Students will also be able to demonstrate their improvement when they play at Horsehay golf club.

Dave who missed out on playing for the team previously due to injury will play in a three match series at Largs, Inverclyde on the 19 , 20, 21st August.

Olly Logan new Mens 1XI Captain

The club are delighted to announce that Olly Logan will take over the Mens 1XI captaincy for the forthcoming season. Olly joined the club in 2005/6 season after finishing his studies at Liverpool John Moores and beginning his career working at the English Institute of Sport based at Lilleshall National Sports Centre. He went straight into the Mens 1XI squad after playing with a few of them at Uni and was an integral part of the team that secured promotion to the National League in 2006/7 season.

Following the club's 2 year stint in the National League, Olly moved to Belper to team up with his Northern Ireland counterpart and sterling kitty man on his recent stag do, Neil Slane and played for a season and half for them before returning to Telford at Christmas last year after work committments and the commute to Belper took its toll, coupled by fact the Mens 1XI were playing and training at his place of work!

The Mens 1XI have been back at pre-season training for over a month now and start their league campaign on September 17th against Northampton Saints. They will also host the Shropshire Mens County Cup at Lilleshall on Saturday 3th September. Supporters always welcome.

Training Programme for 2011-2012

This season there has been a slight change to our training programme,hopefully to make it easier to manage both for members and coach's alike.

This season Dave Tracey who is a first team regular and a EHB level 2 coach, will be our head coach for both junior and senior training.

All training sessions will be held at St Georges Astro pitch.

Sunday junior training remains the same and starts on 4th September at 9.00am to include registration, the actual training session will normally run from 9.30am to 11.00am.

This session is aimed at newcomers to the sport aged up to 15yrs and includes the 'Superstars' group, which caters for our very youngest members.

Cost for the season is £45 with 25% off for a second junior.

The next stage of training will be a junior training session held on Tuesdays and will start on 6th September between 6pm and 8pm, which is aimed at members who are playing in junior teams.

Senior training will move from Thursday's to Tuesday's 8pm to 10pm and will be open to all players irrespective of age playing in senior teams.

Cost for the season is £80 for the season with 25% off for a second junior.

If you are unsure of what session to attend, please attend the group session that you last attended.

Please note, that in line with EHB guidelines all members must now wear gumshields and suitable shinpads for all training sessions. Unfortunately if you don't have the correct equipment you will not be allowed to train.

GRAND MASTERS HOCKEY EUROPEAN CUP

Neuss, Germany– August 21/25 2011

After three trials the squad for the England Great Grand Masters team (over 65’s) was selected, and I managed to keep my place. I had to play in a new position, as the right half from the previous season’s over 60’s team had moved up an age group, so I was moved to centre back.

During the summer we had several training/practice sessions, plus the home internationals at Durham. In our age group the home internationals consisted of one game against Scotland – Wales are not yet ready to field a side at over 65 level. Scotland put up some stern resistance, and although we scored early on it was not until into the second half that we got our second (a Tranter follow-up at a short corner). Scotland then surprised us by attacking, and got one back, but the match ended 2-1 to England.

We knew that it was likely to be a difficult European campaign. Germany on their home soil, Holland always likely to be dangerous, a round robin format with only four matches. No room for mistakes.

Our first match was against Holland. The Dutch were quick and physical, we were below par. In the end I think we were glad to come away with a 0-0 draw. It was certainly a good test for our defence, and I think that we were quietly pleased that we didn’t concede.

That first result meant that goal difference was likely to be crucial, and we woke up with a vengeance against Scotland on day 2. England 9, Scotland 0. Sorry, Scotland, but we had to do the business – and we did. Meanwhile, Holland beat Italy 5-0.

Day 3 was a day off for us. Holland beat Scotland 7-1.

On day 4 we played Germany, always likely to be interesting! The first half was a coach’s dream. Our short corner practice through the summer paid off. Four short corners in the first half, half time score 4-0. We had even conceded a stroke (goal-line stick save by me at a German corner, onto a German foot; whistle; penalty stroke – what for?

Stopping the ball backstick … I still don’t know how I could have done that).However, goalkeeper Paddy saved the day, and the stroke. After half time we went 5-0 up, then conceded two goals fairly quickly. I had a bit of aggro with a German forward – I took the ball off him so he trampled me – resulting in my missing the last ten minutes or so (my first time on the bench). However we recovered our composure and scored again. Final score 6-2. Rest day for Holland.

One advantage of a slight back injury was the opportunity to visit the tournament physio – German, tall, blonde, female, very attractive, very friendly (and very efficient). In fact she was so efficient that I felt that I had to see her again the following morning.

Final day – our goal difference two better than Holland. They play Germany, we play Italy at the same time – it’s ours to lose. Italy were pretty feeble, in all honesty. Holland beat Germany 3-0 but we put 12 past Italy, so were comfortable winners in the end. I got the last goal – another short corner move.

The tournament was another clean sweep for England at over 60, over 65 and over 70 levels. England are now World and European champions at all over 60 levels.

We also had the chance to go and watch England in the ‘real’ Eoropean Championships at Monchengladbach. I watched them beat France 8-0, and saw the semi-final against Germany, until the suspension of play with 20 minutes to go because the pitch was flooded (missed the last 20 minutes – England eventually lost 3-0).

All in all, it was another great experience. I still find it difficult to believe how lucky I am to be able to play at that level at my age. My message to all club members – keep on playing; the more you play the more fun and friendship you can have.

CVL hockey returns to Telford

After an absence of several years, CVL hockey is returning to Telford this Sunday, when youngsters will be able to get their first taste of competitive hockey against teams from other clubs from across the region.

As well as local Shropshire Clubs, teams have been invited from further afield and future tournaments are already in the pipeline.

Organised by Amanda ’Muppet’ Bailey the event is primarily aimed at kids who do not yet play regular team hockey with U11 and U13 age groups competing in a round robin event.

Youngsters will also have the opportunity to umpire games whilst being mentored by qualified umpires.

The first games get under way at midday.

Second CVL tournament success

Eleven teams competed in the second CVL tournamament which was held at St George's yesterday, with teams from Telford and Wrekin, St Patricks Roman Catholic Junior School, North Staffs Hockey Club, Whitchurch Hockey Club and Wem Hockey Club.

None of the youngsters seemed to mind the cold and foggy conditions which saw some great hockey being played by all the teams. It was also nice to see our first local school, St Pat's taking part and hope they become regulars to the tournament.

A note of thanks to Amanda 'Muppet' Bailey who did all the organising to ensure the success of the event.

CVL Tournament Continues To Grow

The third CVL tournament took place on Sunday at St George's with teams from across the county and from further afield taking part. A total of twelve teams braved a biting wind to play some great hockey in U11 and U13 categories.

Again the success of the tournament was down to hard work and organisation of Amanda 'Muppet' Bailey, assisted on the day by other coaches and parents from the club.

Junior teams through to Regional Finals

Sunday saw four of our junior teams competing in the county round of the in2hockey competiton run by the EHB.

Boys and girls teams from Telford played against clubs from around the county in the U10 and U12 age groups resulting in the U10 girls and the U10 boys winning their competition, as well as the U12 girls finishing 2nd, going forward to regional finals being held on31st March and 1st April at Rugby.The U12 boys finished 3rd narrowlly missing out on place at the Rugby finals.

Abseil Fund Raiser

The club is holding a sponsored abseil fund raising event on Saturday 21st April from the bell tower of St Peter's Church Edgemond, near Newport.

The event is being run together with the 1st Edgemond Scouts group who have previously run similar events.

The bell tower standing at about 90 feet will be rigged with two abseiling ropes manned by trained Senior Adventure Scouts.

There will be a BBQ and a bar for the event which will kick off at 9.30am finishing at about 5.30pm. There is ample car parking opposite the church.

To make the event viable we need about 100 abseilers with a target of £20 sponsorship each. This is a fantastic opportunity to raise funds for the club, so please get involved.

A former member of the hockey club has been killed whilst serving in Afghanistan.

Corporal Brent John McCarthy, of the Royal Air Force, was killed alongside Lance Corporal Lee Thomas Davies, 27, from the 1st Battalion Welsh Guards at a patrol base in the Lashkar Gah district of Helmand province.

The club sends sincere condolences to Brent's family and friends and to the family and friends of Lance Corporal Davies.
